Ivane State University (TSU) was established in Tbilisi in 1918 as the first institution of higher education in the Caucasus region under the leadership of the renowned historian Ivane Javakhishvili and a group of historians. Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University was founded in 1918 in the capital city of Tbilisi. It is the oldest university in Georgia and the Caucasus region. The university opened on January 26, 1918, under the name of King of Georgia, architect David, and education began. When the university was first established, there was only one faculty, the Faculty of Philosophy, and the university continued with a small number of lecturers and students until the dissolution of the Soviet Union, when it became Tbilisi State University.
Tbilisi State University started its education with 18 professors and faculty members. It now continues with 5,000 faculty members and over 35,000 students. TSU has been ranked 398th globally according to the US News & World Report university ranking, on par with the University of Warsaw. The university has five branches in Georgian cities, six faculties, 60 laboratories, a scientific research center, a scientific library (housing 3,700,000 books and journals), seven museums, and a publishing house and printing press.
